## le corps

pain uses `avoir mal à`, and `à` contracts with the article: `J'ai mal au genou.`, `J'ai mal à la tête.`, `J'ai mal à l'épaule.`, `J'ai mal aux jambes.` English uses a possessive (_my knee_); French uses the definite article, because the owner is already the subject.

## la météo

weather takes the impersonal `il`: `Il fait froid.`, `Il pleut.`, `Il neige.` seasons split on the first sound: `au printemps`, then `en été`, `en automne`, `en hiver`, because `en` goes before a vowel.

## les mots de liaison

the small words that link one sentence to the next. `donc` and `alors` both mean _so_: `donc` gives a logical result, `alors` moves a story forward. `car` explains like `parce que` but belongs to writing. `après` takes a noun (`après le cours`) or a past infinitive (`après avoir mangé`); `avant` takes `de` before a verb (`avant de partir`). the B2 connectors continue in [[#les connecteurs|les connecteurs]].

## le passé simple

you will read this tense far more often than you say it. it is the tense of written narration. [[fr/books/le-petit-prince.pdf|Le Petit Prince]] tells its story in the passé composé, the way a man talks, but its dialogue tags are passé simple: `répondit` appears 37 times, `fit` 19 times, `fut` 15 times, then `demanda` and `ajouta`. Camus wrote L’Étranger in the passé composé on purpose; Sartre said each of its sentences is an island.

four ending families cover almost every verb:

- `-er` verbs: `-a`, `-èrent` (`il parla`, `ils parlèrent`)
- most `-ir` and `-re` verbs: `-it`, `-irent` (`il finit`, `il répondit`)
- many `-oir` verbs and some others: `-ut`, `-urent` (`il put`, `il connut`)
- `venir`, `tenir` and their family: `-int`, `-inrent` (`il vint`, `ils vinrent`)

the imperfect subjunctive is its rarer twin. you meet it after a past main verb in older books: `Elle ne voulait pas qu'il la vît pleurer.`
