## confirmed interview contract

The supplied `Inferact Interview Guide`, dated June 1, 2026, is the strongest process evidence. It names three technical rounds:

| round | confirmed evaluation | preparation named by Inferact |
| ------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| coding interview | independent coding quality across structure, correctness, performance, and readability | CoderPad; PyTorch for inference; Triton refresher for kernels |
| technical deep dive | one specific technical subject, communication, past achievement, and depth under Socratic questioning | prepared document or slides on one or two major projects |
| system design | technical vocabulary and collaborative reasoning in a novel problem without one correct answer | shared Google Doc or Excalidraw; reasoning and tradeoffs matter |

The guide says Inferact uses agents in daily work while evaluating whether candidates can write and judge code independently. Every coding mock in this package therefore bans agents and whole-expression autocomplete.

## target role

The current [Member of Technical Staff, Inference](https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/Inferact/43c0ca54-fcf5-41fa-83a1-38800c75ccc0) posting describes an inference-runtime engineer working at the core of vLLM across LLM and diffusion-model serving.

The minimum signals are unusually crisp:

- deep understanding of transformers and their variants
- Python fluency with PyTorch internals
- experience with vLLM, TensorRT-LLM, SGLang, TGI, or adjacent inference engines
- ability to read papers and implement model architectures or inference techniques
- performant, maintainable changes in complex ML codebases
- debugging across model and runtime layers

The preferred signals add KV-cache memory management, prefix caching, hybrid model serving, RL frameworks, and multimodal inference. The bonus signals reward core inference-engine features, integrations such as verl or OpenRLHF, open-source contributions, and widely shared technical work.

This predicts a model-runtime coding round. Generic LeetCode remains useful for control-flow fluency, though it sits below tensor layout, attention, sampling, cache mechanics, and paper-to-code translation for this loop.

## company and project boundary

[Inferact](https://inferact.ai/) says it was founded by vLLM creators and core maintainers to grow vLLM as an open inference engine and make inference cheaper and faster. Its public problem statement centers on model proliferation, mixture-of-experts, multimodality, agentic workloads, hardware fragmentation, and production scale.

The ownership language needs precision. Inferact is a maintainer and commercial-steward cluster around vLLM. [vLLM remains an open project hosted by the PyTorch Foundation](https://pytorch.org/blog/pytorch-foundation-welcomes-vllm/) with multi-institution and multi-vendor governance. An interview answer should show upstream judgment rather than treating vLLM as a proprietary Inferact monolith.

The [vLLM repository](https://github.com/vllm-project/vllm) exposes the technical surface:

- continuous batching, chunked prefill, and prefix caching
- PagedAttention and multiple optimized attention backends
- CUDA and HIP graphs plus `torch.compile`
- tensor, pipeline, data, expert, and context parallelism
- speculative decoding and structured outputs
- dense, MoE, hybrid, and multimodal models
- quantized weights, activations, and KV caches
- disaggregated prefill, decode, and encode paths
- a Python engine core plus an emerging Rust serving frontend

The current [vLLM roadmap](https://roadmap.vllm.ai/) gives stronger weighting than old interview rumors: scheduler and KV-cache-manager work, model-runner evolution, multi-tier KV offload, speculative decoding, quantized KV, agentic workloads, Rust frontend readiness, and production-quality CI.

## evidence rules

| label | meaning |
| --------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| confirmed | supplied interview material or a first-party role explicitly says it |
| primary | current official code, docs, paper, roadmap, or team technical writing supports the mechanism |
| derived | this kit predicts a useful prompt from confirmed and primary signals; Inferact has not confirmed the prompt |
| weak | a third party infers a process or question without an attributable candidate report |

## public-report search

No attributable candidate report with actual Inferact questions, timing, interviewers, take-home details, or a pass rubric was found as of July 21, 2026.

One third-party prep page publishes questions that it labels as likely. Those prompts merely restate the role descriptions. They remain weak evidence and are excluded from the question bank.

The absence of reports means:

- do not claim a confirmed LeetCode pool
- do not claim a confirmed vLLM code-reading exercise
- do not claim a benchmark or debugging exercise
- do not claim a specific system-design prompt
- use the supplied guide for process and the live role for technical weighting

## strongest predictions

### coding

Expect either a complete interview-sized `nn.Module` or an inference mechanism whose tensor shapes and edge cases matter:

- a decoder-only language model assembled from a typed config
- an existing dense model extended with GQA, KV cache, MoE, or multimodal input
- a training-oriented model ported into a flattened-token inference contract
- stable masked logits, top-k, top-p, or beam update
- attention or grouped-query attention reference code
- KV-cache append, gather, or block-table lookup
- model components such as RMSNorm, RoPE, SwiGLU, or MoE routing
- ragged-batch indexing and compaction
- quantize, dequantize, or scale application
- a paper or pseudocode translated into readable PyTorch

### Socratic deep dive

Expect the interviewer to descend through the stack until every claim reaches a measurement or invariant:

- exact workload and baseline
- system boundary and personal ownership
- profiler evidence and causal diagnosis
- rejected alternatives
- numerical or semantic correctness
- failure, rollout, and residual risk
- what changes for another model, accelerator, traffic distribution, or SLO

### system design

Expect an inference system with competing goals:

- TTFT versus ITL versus throughput
- prefill compute versus decode bandwidth
- KV capacity versus concurrency
- prefix locality versus load balance
- disaggregation flexibility versus transfer cost
- quantization memory wins versus quality and backend support
- graph capture savings versus static-shape and memory constraints
- distributed parallelism versus collective cost and failure scope

## preparation conclusion

The evidence supports a candidate who can join a vLLM design review and move between PyTorch tensors, model architecture, runtime state, GPU execution, and production SLOs without losing the owning boundary. That is the target state for the rest of this package.
